Shopping for Sparklers This Summer
It’s summertime once again, and that means everybody is getting their grills ready to barbeque and planning their backyard parties. For most families, the 4th of July weekend is usually the biggest backyard party of them all and that means stocking up on sparklers and other fireworks in addition to the meats and snacks that everybody loves.
If you’ve walked into a fireworks store in the past few years, then you probably have realized that there are many more options available than when we were kids. They used to be small stands with a single option each for sparklers, smoke balls, snakes, and bottle rockets, but now there are dozens of versions of every type of firework. Since sparklers are the most popular item and there are too many brands of fireworks to list coupled with the various sizes, colors, and shapes available, I figured writing a definitive guide to shopping for them may be helpful. Here’s what you need to know before you shop for your sparklers for a summer of fun.
The idea of buying sparklers in different colors isn’t really that new, but there are more color options than ever before. There are the classic color options such as red, blue, and green sparklers, but then there are totally wild options like neon sparkler and even sparklers that change colors as they burn! Most of the standard color sparklers will just burn with slight tints of your chosen hue, but neon sparklers and color-changing sparklers will be much more colorful. Color pigment research has improved by leaps and bounds over the last decade, so make sure you take that into consideration if color sparklers are what you’re interested in purchasing.
There are also many different types of sparklers available these days, and knowing the difference is important. One of the most obvious differences is whether or not the sparklers have a metal handle or a wooden handle. Metal handles are also preferred since they stay cooler and won’t break apart like the wooden handles do. The benefit of buying sparklers with wooden handles, usually bamboo, is that they are much less expensive to buy.
Also, there are sparklers that are packaged for different purposes. Most of the sparklers that you find during the summer will be plastered with American flags and other patriotic symbols, but you may notice a few other types of packaging at your local fireworks store. Many people have started to use sparklers for weddings and they are easily identifiable by their boxes. There are also sparklers that are sold for use at birthdays, some that you put on your cake instead of holding in your hand and some that are just packaged more suitably for a birthday party. Other than their packaging, these sparklers are the same as any other type that you see on the shelves.
When and Where to Shop
If you want to get the best possible pricing on your sparklers, you need to know where to look and when to buy. If we are lucky enough to be in a year when a weekend falls just after the 4th of July, you can usually get clearance prices at the fireworks store since they want to clear out their inventory for next year. Sometimes you can get sparklers for as cheap as ½ off their regular price! If that’s not the case, you should still go to an actual fireworks store instead of buying them while waiting in line at the grocery store. Fireworks stores always have a better selection and better prices during the summer, and that makes for a much better sparkler shopping experience.
